Information for Faculty Survey Respondents
For Institutional Data Providers

If you have been asked to provide data for the Spring 2023 Faculty, Academic Careers, and Environments (FACE) Project pilot study, your institution has been selected to be a part of a nationally representative sample of all degree-granting nonprofit colleges and universities in the United States.
In most cases, the president or provost of your institution has asked that you serve as institutional representative for the FACE Project. This page provides an overview of the pilot study and links to other resources about the project.
FACE is a project of the Pullias Center for Higher Education at the University of Southern California, in collaboration with the University of Alabama and RTI International. The project has been approved by the institutional review board (IRB) at the University of Southern California and is funded with a grant from the National Science Foundation.
The FACE Project pilot study has three components:
- An institutional questionnaire to collect information about the academic personnel institutions employ;
- Rosters from those institutions listing the individuals who meet the study definitions; and
- A survey of individual academic workers.
As one of the institutions selected for the pilot sample, you are being asked to complete a questionnaire providing the following:
- Aggregate counts of academic personnel and basic information about employment policies,
- A roster of the individuals meeting the study population definition with employment characteristics and demographic information for each person.
During the pilot, these rosters will be used to develop potential sampling strategies for future, full-scale data collection. We will not use roster information to contact individuals unless your institution has previously agreed to have your faculty participate in the study.
The faculty survey is being distributed separately from the institutional questionnaire, and you will not be responsible for inviting anyone to participate in the faculty survey.
To provide your institution’s response, please use the instructions provided by RTI International for accessing the project portal.
