Charge On Award Recipient Makes Inspiring Decision
Student turns good fortune into selfless act
How this college student spent her Charge On! award money is quite surprising and undeniably heartwarming. Evelyn was awarded a $1,000 prize for her participation in an innovative research project conducted by USC Pullias Center for Higher Education, the non-profit Get Schooled, and California State University, Dominguez Hills.
She could have spent her award on anything from covering the costs of textbooks to a new wardrobe for her upcoming sophomore year at CSUDH. She was one of many students who had earned a chance to be randomly selected for the top Charge On! prize by participating in a special digital campaign designed to utilize gamification, technology, and social media tools to motivate, educate and support students in transitioning to college.
But when the check came her thoughts weren’t of herself. She had started her freshman year without being able to afford a much-needed laptop computer that could help her with her studies. Her father, as dads often do, made the sacrifice to buy one for her.
Without a moment’s thought, she passed her prize money onto her father. She wanted to show him her appreciation for his support during her transition into college.
We salute Evelyn for her dedication to education and family.
