Education and Engineering Pioneer Dr. John Brooks Slaughter to Speak on his “Remarkable Trajectory”
Dr. Slaughter, Dean’s Professor of Education and Engineering, Shares his Inspiring Story on Thursday, May 5 at USC
Education and engineering pioneer and USC Professor Dr. John Brooks Slaughter will share his journey through education and engineering as part of USC Viterbi’s “Remarkable Trajectory” Speaker Series on Thursday, May 5 at 4pm. Dr. Slaughter’s lecture is open to all, both in person at USC’s Hughes Aircraft Electrical Engineering building, and via Zoom.
Growing up during an era in which opportunities were scarce for African Americans, John Brooks Slaughter had a series of unexpected professional experiences, as well as good fortune, that led him to the directorship of the National Science Foundation, the leadership of two educational institutions, and culminated in his position as a professor of education and engineering at USC. In this presentation, he will talk about that journey, some of the things he learned, and the people who helped him on the way.
John Brooks Slaughter joined the USC Rossier School of Education in January 2010 as Professor of Education, with a joint appointment at the Viterbi School of Engineering. His education research has been in the areas of higher education leadership, diversity and inclusion in higher education, underrepresented minorities in STEM, and access and affordability. In his position at Rossier and Viterbi, Dr. Slaughter looks at the intersection between engineering and education, with a focus on what has become his lifelong quest of increasing minority participation in the science and engineering fields.
Dr. Slaughter’s lecture will begin at 4pm on May 5, followed by a reception at 5pm in the Hughes Aircraft Building Courtyard. No RSVP is necessary, and is open to all who wish to attend.
